本文以長老教會宣教師馬偕所引介入臺灣的現代化教育理念為研 究起點，首先回溯並介紹形塑馬偕教育理念的改革宗神學傳統在十八世 紀所經歷的蘇格蘭啟蒙運動，以及從該啟蒙思維所發展出的整全教育理 念，包括跨學科的對話、人的自主性與啟蒙教育、啟蒙福音主義、公民 社會與民主化等內涵。接著，在第二部分，本文以馬偕的教育師承為 例，嘗試勾勒出蘇格蘭啟蒙運動及其教育理念對臺灣早期英國及加拿大 長老教會宣教師的可能影響。

Using the modern educational ideas of George Leslie Mackay,the first Canadian Presbyterian missionary to northern Taiwan,as a starting point for further enquiry,this article aims to trace and introduce the impact of the Scottish Enlightenment on the educational philosophy of the Reformed theological tradition which deeply shaped Mackay’s ideas.These include interdisciplinary dialogue,human autonomy and enlightened education, enlightened evangelicalism,civil society and democracy.In the second part,tracing Mackay’s educational inheritance,this article ventures to depict possible influence of these enlightened educational ideas on the early English and Canadian Presbyterian missionaries to Taiwan.
