1887 年清朝政府始設臺灣府雲林縣為縣級行政區劃。在此之前，從出 土的考古資料顯示本地早在新石器時代已有人群活動，至荷西時期（1624- 1662），隨著荷蘭人的治理範圍與影響力從臺南逐漸往外擴張，雲林地區的 族群活動也浮現在史料中。清領後期，劉銘傳受命為臺灣首任巡撫，推展臺 灣建省相關事宜，為使政治力有效連結至各區域，重新調整臺灣行政區劃， 臺灣府雲林縣即在這波調整中設置，範圍涵蓋現今的雲林縣全境與南投縣西 南部份區域。至日治時期（1895-1945），雖不再以雲林做為行政區名，惟 因行政區域的拆分，為戰後雲林縣轄區範圍再確立奠下基礎。戰後中華民國 政府於1950 年重新設置雲林縣，考量地理、歷史、文化、交通與經濟等各 層面因素，設縣區域涵蓋範圍限縮在日治後期的斗六、虎尾、北港三郡，而 與清朝所設置的雲林縣範圍略有差異。本文除詳述雲林各時代行政區劃調整 經過外，並從設縣背景、管轄地域、縣治所在三方面比較清領及戰後兩個雲 林縣的相異之處。

In 1887, the Qing government established Yunlin County, Taiwan Prefecture, as a county-level administrative division. Before this, the unearthed archaeological data showed that there were human activities in this land as early as the Paleolithic period. During the Nederlanders colonial period (1624-1662), the scope and influence of the Nederlanders gradually expanded outwards from Tainan. Ethnic activities in the Yunlin area also emerged and were documented in historical data. In 1885, the Qing government appointed Liu Ming- Chuan as the first governor of Taiwan to promote matters related to the establishment of Taiwan province. In order to effectively link political power to various regions and adjust Taiwan's administrative divisions, Yunlin County, Taiwan Prefecture, was established during this stage of adjustments, covering the entire area of the Yunlin County today and the southwestern part of Nantou County after undergoing county relocation twice. Until the Japanese Colonial Period (1895-1945),Yunlin was no longer used as a name for administrative division and was further divided under the jurisdiction of neighboring counties or departments. It was not until 1950 that the government of the Republic of China re-established Yunlin County after the war. The establishment of the new Yunlin County took various factors into consideration, including geography, history, culture, transportation, economy, etc. which was slightly different from the scope of Yunlin County set up by the Qing government.
