西班牙傳教士Jacinto Esquivel在1632年撰寫了一篇〈關於艾爾摩莎 島情況的報告〉，成為學界論及西班牙在臺時期歷史必然提及的文獻。 過去學者依據不同論文主題摘引片斷文字，藉以分析商業傳統、語言、 社群定位等課題，筆者認為，這篇報告亦可視為單一的一件文本，閱讀 並分析全文內容與架構，或可呈現出不同的歷史圖像與認知。 本文認為這篇報告是1632年前後傳教士Esquivel對臺灣情勢的認識 與思考，涉及兩個問題，一個是西班牙佔領臺灣前期有關臺灣的知識建 構，即他們如何看待、描述或建構臺灣的人、事、物；另一問題是，透 過Esquivel的報告，可以了解西班牙人在此一時期於臺灣據點的處境。

Fr. Jacinto Esquivel’s report “Memoria de las cosas pertenecientes al estado de la Isla Hermosa” is an important and trustworthy document about the history of the Spaniards in Taiwan. The scholar quoted part of the words for different thesis to analyze such subjects as commercial tradition, language, location of tribes. However, this memorial can also be deemed a single text and the author try to re–read and analyze contents and structure of the full text. The author argues that Esquivel’s memorial reveals his understanding and thinking about the situation of the Spaniards in Taiwan around A.D. 1632. There are two questions could be discussed, one is how the knowledge of Taiwan is built and constructed by the Spaniards, i.e. how they think about and describe the people, geography, customs and economic matters of Taiwan. Another question is, by re–reading the memorial of Esquivel, what the situation and difficulties are encountered by the Spanish in the stronghold of Taiwan in the early 1630’s.
