The Wei residence is located at Haitoushe in the Anping District of Tainan City, next to the Wenlong Hall of the Eastern Earth God Temple. Rebuilt on its present site in the early twentieth century, the building is a fine example of the rarely seen “single-wing” residence. The building has been designated a historic structure by the City of Tainan, and the Wei family memorial tablets indicate that their first ancestor to come to Taiwan was Wei Dayou, who once served as the deputy admiral of Taiwan’s navy. During the Zhu Yigui Incident, Wei came to Taiwan to serve as the xiebiao youying shoubei of the navy. Wei Joined forces with Lin Liang and Ye Yinglong to capture Luermen. They then proceeded southwards, repelling an assault by Zhu Yigui and capturing Anping. Afterwards, Wei and Lin jointly led an attack on Zhu at Xigang and Sucuo, Anding, routing Zhu’s large army. They also had soldiers swim from Anping to the prefectural city to determine the strength of the enemy forces. Both Lin and Wei were rewarded for their success in the Zhu Yigui Incident. In 1722 Lin was promoted in rank by two levels, going from youji(遊擊) directly to deputy admiral of Taiwan, skipping over the rank of canjiang(參將). Wei was also promoted in rank by two levels, in 1721 going from shoubei- directly to youji(遊 擊) of the Taixie Youying, skipping over the rank of duci(都司). In 1724 Lin was promoted to the rank of zongbingguan(總兵官) of the Taiwan Garrison, and Wei was promoted to the rank of taixie fujiang (臺協副將). Very brief reference to these events has been made in a number of books and articles, including “The Steles, Tablets, and Couplets of Anping” (Shi Yangsui, 1953); “Anping Shijin” (Zhu Feng, 1953); Annals of Tainan City, Fascicle Six: Records of the People (Huang Dianquan, 1958); Epigraphs of Southern Taiwan, Part Two (Huang Dianquan, 1966); and Ongoing Research on the Annals of Tainan City, Fascicle Two: Clans (Xie Guoxing, 1997). Thus I decided to carry out a detailed examination of the relevant Qing dynasty documents in order to clarify the role Wei Dayou played in the Zhu Yigui Incident. In addition to presenting details regarding Wei’s promotions, I examine evidence drawn from over 40 memorial tablets provided by Wei’s descendents and household registration records from the Japanese colonial era to determine the veracity of various elements in the local legends known as “Commander Wei Saves the Emperor” and “Weipi Chengu.”
