Asai Erin was a linguist who had studied languages of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan during the Japanese Occupation. He left a large amount of photographs and field notes which he recorded through his field research in Taiwan. Among these materials we can find precious data about the extinct languages of Peipo people in Puli basin. In this paper author investigate the manuscript of “Aboriginal Songs of Doatu Tsuili Babusa Villages” discovered and photographed by Asai in Doatu(=Datu-cheng) Village of Puli , and inquire about which ethnic group handed down this festival song. Another manuscript of “Aboriginal Song of Babuza” was discovered and analyzed by Song Wen-shun and Liu Chi-wan in 1952. According to the studies of the Japanese linguists and cultural anthropologists, the Babuza Village wad thought to be a village of the Babuza People. So “the Aboriginal song of Babuza” has been recognized as a Festival song of Babuza People. However, recent research by Chien Shi-lan made it clear that the Aboriginal Song manuscript is written in Papora, not in Babuza. He questioned the ethnic classification of the people of Datu-cheng Village. Author based on Chien’s opinion, try to look at the matter from the different angle. Investigating Asai’ s field records with the family resisters during the Japanese occupation and considering another manuscript discovered by Tsuchida Sigeru, author discuss about who were the bearer of the aboriginal song in Datu-cheng. Author also indicate that the ambiguous remarks of the linguistic and anthropological classification related to the Papora and Babuza during the Japanese occupation caused to make up the misunderstanding of the current ethnic classification.
