From the sixteenth century onward, the Jesuits, headed by Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), introduced impressive amount of western knowledge into China, which brought about substantial response among the Chinese intellects. After the middle Ching period, the influence of western culture, along with the expansion of the European powers, continued to cause plentiful waves in the late-Ching society. As a consequence, western discussion on astronomy, geography, or natural history appeared in the text of Taiwan’s gazetteers. This paper is to investigate the motive and mode of adopting western learning assumed by gazetteers of the period, to analyze the role of western elements in the gazetteer knowledge system, and to inspect the attitudes held by official or gentry gazetteer writers towards western learning or western religion in various periods.
