乾隆19年（1754年）福建省漳州府平和縣人林石（1729-1788年）， 入墾大里杙，數年後已有小規模拓墾資產。受林爽文事件牽連波及，後 代子孫四散各地，其中一支移往沿山的太平地區發展。太平地區位居臺 中盆地東緣，大部分為山地與丘陵地形，約占全區面積的五分之四，平 地僅占五分之一，現屬臺中市太平區。 林石後人移墾的前進路線，沿著當年的番界越界開發，第三代林志 芳奠定經濟開發的基礎，開墾有成之際，又因參與鎮壓戴潮春事件，進 而成為地方頭人，獲得官方給予的維護治安職務，更加鞏固其家族的社 會地位。到第四代林鳳鳴時，不但開墾面積廣闊，更組成家族墾號「林 合順」，團結資金與力量，將拓墾事業推向高峰。 綜觀太平林家的拓墾過程，土地的開發使林家獲致良好的發展機 會，藉由軍功和積極參與地方事務，從墾首成為地方頭人，再藉由投入 政治和公共事務，提升家族在地方的影響力，是常見的漢人移民家族移 墾臺灣的模式。

The Lin Zhi-fang family of Tai-ping played a major role in the integration of the peasant society of central Taiwan. Lin Zhi-fang’s grandfather, Lin Shi went agricultural immigrant Dali in 1754, a few years to develop the land has been small-scale assets.
