The paper attempts to reconstruct the picture of a seventeenth century Formosan Austronesian baptized Theodore in maritime North Taiwan. Attention is given to how the said Theodore emerged from the European arrival on North Taiwan, and how he managed to profit by being a cultural broker between the Dutch and the Kavalan peoples. In addition to serving as a case history of Formosan Austronesian figure, the paper uses his story not only as a snapshot of the maritime history of North Taiwan but also as an endeavor to provide a convergent explanation on historical toponomic puzzles among some scholars.
