Mr. Chung-Ho Cheng is the wealthiest merchant in Kaoshuing during Japanese rule, during which period Kaoshuing gradually became an industrial city.Although Chen’s family invested extensively, they still focused on agricultural industries such as sugar making, salt making, rice, and land developments, and had stayed away from many of the new industires cropping up in the city at the time. The rise of Chen’s family during Japanese rule could be divided into three stages:the first stage starts from 1895 to 1923, when Chung-Ho Chen successfully set up Hsing-Hsing Sugar factory and Wu Shu Ling salt factory, and participated in various business projects both in Kaoshuing and around the island, setting the foundation of Chen’s family wealth;the second stage is from the year 1923 to 1930, when the Chen family invested mostly in land, although family member Chi-Feng Chenalso involved in various new industries started by Japanese merchants, the family was not in any way paly a dominant role;the third stage starts from the year 1930 to 1945, during which period Mr. Chung-Ho Chen passed away and the family made very limited investments, most of their factories were also forcibly acquire! d by the government due to the war. What the Chen family experienced during the Japanese rule also reflects the rise of many Taiwan merchants who made their fortune by traditional sugar, salt and rice factories. Facing the industrial change, they were limited by the government policy of favoring Japanese conglomerates and had no ability to adapt. Comparing with the Taiwan merchants active in the later Japanese colonial period, the investment preference of the early Taiwan merchants is also worth a deeper study.
