Since 2000, the phenomenon of“the glory of Taiwan”emerged in Taiwanese society, and media and people’s collective memory usually consider the Taiwanese little league baseball team Hongye’s legendary victory over the Japanese in 1968 as the commencement of this glory. This phenomenon reflects the enthusiasm for championship in Taiwanese society, which is also a collective memory of the nationalistic discourse of Taiwan. The construction of this collective memory involves the selection and intentional misinterpretation of the historical facts. This paper reviews Hongye’s road to its victory over the Japanese team and finds Hongye’s legend emerged from the news reporting Hongye’s poor financial condition that constrained them from participating games held in distant cities. The contrast of Hongye’s poor condition and their strong strength attracted Taiwanese people’s eyes and accumulated their fame, which brought them more financial and material supports and led them to the fabrication of the nationalistic discourse. It is a mixture of myths and facts, and this paper uses the official materials from the Little League Baseball to clarify a critical myth that Hongye defeated the world champion of 1968. This myth made Hongye the legendary figure of“the glory of Taiwan”. However, another poor team, the Poai, also experienced hard conditions as did Hongye, but they received fewer attentions and did not participated in the discourse of“glory of Taiwan”. The author believes Boai’s failure in wining the champion excludes its from the nationalistic discourse because Taiwanese society only wants the best. This paper finally criticizes this social monomania.
