本文旨在探討日治時期臺灣民用航空發展的歷史過程，析論1930 年代後臺灣在「日本帝國航空圈」發展過程中所扮演的角色與意義。 首先，以第一次世界大戰後日本民航之發展為背景，闡述1930年代「內 臺、島內定期航線」的開設過程及營運情形，並由搭乘客層之差異來分 析各航線的性質及意義。當時臺灣已是日本帝國南方的門戶及南進據 點，自1936年「內臺、島內定期航線」相繼開設成功後，臺灣更成為帝 國南方國際航線的起點，其中「南支、南洋航線」之開設尤為重要。 1936年後開設以臺灣為中心的國際航線之舉，逐漸促使臺灣成為帝國南 方航空圈的中心，並成為日本帝國搶佔經貿活動、軍事戰略先機的重要 據點。 另外，1941年底太平洋戰爭爆發後，臺灣的民用航空因戰時所需而 轉為「軍用定期航線」，探究臺灣航空轉型前後的變化及發展情形，將 可看出戰爭末期臺灣民航發展的特質，並得以理解臺灣民航發展在日本 帝國航空圈內，以及所處航空區域（南方航空圈）中所扮演的角色及特 殊位置。

This paper is on the historical development of Taiwanese civilian aviation industry during the Japanese Occupation period, particularly Taiwan’s role in the“Japanese Imperial Aviation Domain” that was in incubation in late 1930s. Firstly, this paper describes the background of Japanese aviation development after the first World War particularly, the establishment and operation of the Japan-Taiwan regular service and the Taiwan island regular service in the 1930s. The individual characteristics and significance of the two services are delineated by socio-economic analyses on the passenger demography of the two services. As the two successful services-officially established in 1936-transformed Taiwan into a primary gateway for the Japanese imperial regime, two important extensions-the “Southern-China”and“South Sea”service-further indicate that Taiwan has become a terminus of international transportation for the Japanese imperial regime. This international role set the stage for Taiwan to receive further imperial investments in economic and military sectors, and became a strategic space for the Japanese regime. When the Pacific War broke out in 1941, Taiwanese civilian aviation industry was transformed into military chartered services. By examining in total the prequel and aftermath of this transformation, this paper argues that Taiwan played an unique role not only in Japanese imperial aviation history, but also in the aviation development of the Asian-Pacific region.
