1860年臺灣開港，西方人為通商、傳教、探險等等原因再度來到臺灣， 也留下與臺灣接觸的各種記載，這些記載雖然存在著問題，但是不失為補充 中文史料之不足及提供不同觀點的價值。晚清宜蘭的中文史料相對缺乏，西 方人的記載能幫助我們增加對當時宜蘭的認識。本文試圖全面檢視晚清實 際到訪宜蘭的西方人，介紹這些人到訪背景並討論其記載的史料價值，以補 中文史料的不足，增進我們對晚清宜蘭的認識。研究發現晚清到訪宜蘭的西 方人不多，但是有幾篇記載詳實的遊記、日記，對瞭解晚清宜蘭對內對外交 通，及對當時蘇澳附近、叭哩沙、龜山島、利澤簡的情況，以及晚清噶瑪蘭 人的處境及南澳泰雅人的文化，都有相當價值，可供我們作為相關研究的參 考。

In 1860, when Taiwan reopened to the world through treaty ports, the Westerners came to Taiwan again for trading, preaching, and exploring. In the meantime, they left various records to describe their contacts with Taiwan. These records, though sometimes biased, could be a valuable supplement for Chinese historical documents and could provide a different point of view. While the Chinese documents of late Qing I-lan are relatively rare, the Westerners’ records could increase our understanding of I-lan at that time. This paper tries to survey the Westerners who had actually visited I-lan during 1840-1895, to introduce them and to evaluate their works of I-lan. We found that only few Westerners had visited I-lan and some of their detailed and accurate travel reports and journals are valuable, especially those concerning the transportation situation, certain places, including Su-ao Bay, Parisa, Steep Island, and the condition of Kavaln people and Atayal people in late Qing I-lan.
