This paper is a compilation of a series of interviews with Hunter H. T. Eu. In
the interviews, Eu stated his education and work history, especially his participation in the planning of the National Park Law, the promotion of wildlife preservation, and tourism in Taiwan. It demonstrates the role of techno–bureaucrats in the
early period of conservation works in post–war Taiwan.
Hunter was humorous, industrious, optimistic in nature, and very enthusiastic about outdoor activities. He was also idealistic. We learn that he is patriotic
through reading how he decided his English name, devoted to his studies in United
States, and his attendance in international conferences. His stories tell us that he
was a person with a love of nature and his homeland Taiwan.
I had interviewed Hunter Eu between 1997 and 1998. He proofread and edited every transcription, which later became the material for this paper. He passed
away in 2008, ten years after I conducted the last interview. The importance of this
document lies in the value of Eu’s conservation work in post–war Taiwan, particularly that of his role in tourism and the preservation of wildlife.
