In the closing stage of the World War II, Japanese military had no ability to counterattack in the Pacific theater because of the U.S. powerful military superiority. Japanese gigantic warships were unable to fight owing to the interception of the U.S. submarines. In response to this unfavorable process of the war, Japanese military designed a quantity of weapons for special attack, trying to make the best use of the remaining resources. Shinyo motorboat was one of the special attack weapons, which was also deployed in Taiwan. The interviewee, Chen Jin Cun, the navy special Taiwanese volunteer of the fifth period enlisted in January 1945, after finishing training in Zuoying, was sent to the 21st Shinyo unit in Shou Shan in Kaohsiung, responsible for maintaining Shinyo motorboats. As a Taiwanese member of Shinyo unit, Chen Jin Cun recounted his personal experience in Shinyo unit, which is a very important oral historical material. Through the interview, we could understand more concretely about the base environment, the maintainance of Shinyo motorboats and also the training process of Shinyo units. The real situation of Japanese military special attack unit and Taiwanese volunteers’ missions towards the end of the WWII were uncovered, adding more information to the existing literal research results.
