In the post 1997 era, the emergence of a new wave of local movement has contributed to the revival of Hong Kong historical studies. One of the most popular instruments for the construction of Hong Kong local history is oral history. In recent years, about one third of the local history publications printed in Hong Kong were products of oral history. To a large extent, oral history has helped to develop a new direction in the study of contemporary Hong Kong history. This paper aims to review the use of oral history in Hong Kong and examine the role oral history has played in the compilation of contemporary Hong Kong history.
