臺灣中部彰化南瑤宮笨港進香團，可說是臺灣大型徒步進香團之鼻祖； 更為了南下笨港進香，而組織龐大的媽會。從清朝乾隆年間彰化南瑤宮建廟 之後，便有往笨港進香的記載，在這二百多年中，面臨了許多的歷史變遷、 動盪與政權的更迭，彰化南瑤宮笨港進香至今仍延續不絕。 1895-1945年日治時期的50年中，彰化南瑤宮笨港進香只有成行3次，分 別為日明治43年（1910）、大正6年（1917）、昭和10年（1935）。從日治 時期的3次笨港進香行程歸納，彰化南瑤宮均約於農曆3月17日起駕，宿西 螺；18日至北港，夜宿新港，在新港停留達二晝夜；20日上午子時交香回 駕。 本文將數十則《臺灣日日新報》，與豐原仕紳張麗俊的《水竹居主人日 記》相互檢視比對；及新港當地蒐羅新「出土」的一些文書資料：新港公學 校《學校沿革誌》與新港奉天宮《日清簿》兩者的記載；尤其再配合上新港 奉天宮、桂香齋及林蘭芽家族現存的匾額加以佐證，更能看出彰化南瑤宮媽 祖進香之舊貌。 南瑤宮的笨港進香活動，已成所有媽祖信徒們的「集體記憶」，並不因 日本殖民政權的統治而中斷，這一條傳承二百多年的香路，已深深烙印在彰 化媽祖信徒們的記憶中，彰化南瑤宮笨港進香可以說是一部臺灣媽祖進香的 活歷史。

The Bengang Mazu pilgrimage of Nanyao Temple in central Taiwan, Changhua, is the very first huge Mazu pilgrim group in Taiwan and also the significant one organized for the southward pilgrimage to Bengang. After Nanyao Temple was established during the Qianlong era, Bengang pilgrimage has been documented since then. Throughout 200 years of unrest history and the changes of regimes, the Mazu pilgrimage of Nanyao Temple has been continually held till nowadays. During the 50 years of the Japanese colonization, the Mazu pilgrimage of Nanyao Temple was only held successfully in Meiji 43 (1910), Taisho 6 (1917) and Showa 10 (1935). Generally speaking, all these three pilgrimages during the Japanese colonization period started around the 17th day of the third lunar month and stayed at Xilou for a night; marching to Beigang on the 18th day and staying at Xingang for two nights and then headed back on the 20th day before dawn. This paper will mutually investigate the news on the Taiwan Nichinichi Shimpo and The Diary of Chang Li-jun, other documents collected at local Xingang, such as the History of Xingang Public school and the Riqing Note of Xingang Fengtian Temple and also, along with the inscribed boards preserved by Fengtian Temple, Gui xiang Pavilion and Lin lanya family and intend to show the whole historical image of the Mazu pilgrimage of Nanyao Temple. The Mazu pilgrimage of Nanyao Temple has become the collective memory of all Mazu worshippers. Not suspended because of the Japanese colonization, it has become the pilgrimage route with the legacy of 200 years, which has been embedded into the memory of the worshippers. The Mazu pilgrimage of Nanyao Temple is thus the living history of Taiwan Mazu pilgrimage.
