Currently the name of Taiwan under Japanese colonial period (1895-1945) is favorable to using “Japanese Rule” rather than “Japanese Occupation” among Taiwan history researchers and in intellectual circles. However, The Executive Yuan of Taiwan Government regardless of the consensus on using “Japanese Rule” mandated government agencies to use “Japanese Occupation” in official documents in July 2013. There were several names to describe Colonial Taiwan in early post-war years. However, people rarely used the term “occupied” to describe the Japanese colonial period. “Japanese Occupation” has become a usual term for the past four decades due to the KMT’s party-state power since 1951. Following the concept of the “Japanese Occupation,” the KMT regime always recognized Taiwan as the stolen territory from the Chinese and disregarded the fifty years of “Japanese Rule.” Consequently, Taiwan Provincial Government took actions to uproot Japanese influences such as historical narratives, documents, monuments, signboards, daily commodities, and gravestones since 1952. Those used Japanese era names and reflected Japanese images were either forcibly replaced by Minguo calendar or eradicated. After the lifting of Martial Law in 1987, the subjectivity of Taiwan has emerged. Meanwhile, the people regained the freedom of expression back and frequently used “Japanese Rule.” Nevertheless, they frequently still have to face the Chinese nationalism of the KMT regime.
