臺灣有不少學校創立於日治時代，國民政府接收臺灣後，大張旗鼓地去 日本化，要求各校校慶統一在10 月25 日光復節，各校校史均以民國紀年， 學校發展則以戰後為主。與之相反，日治時代的創校過程與發展變遷就較少 提及，甚至直接忽略，各級學校對於日治時代的校史發展呈現出渾沌不明的 記載。何時建校？校長有誰？學校發展情況？這些內容幾乎不見於各校校史 中。所幸〈教育志〉的編纂們蒐羅資料，試圖完整呈現學校發展，才讓我們 得以一窺臺灣學校在日治時代的發展過程。然而地方志對於日治時期校史的 記載是否有哪些值得注意之處，筆者從較為熟悉的嘉義地區出發，以〈地方 志中的日治時代校史修纂：以《嘉義市志》與《嘉義縣志》〈教育志〉為例〉， 希望藉此觀察縣市地方志記載學校歷史的情況，並以檔案史料考辨，補充嘉 義縣市志中校史記載的不足之處。

Many Taiwanese schools were founded in Japanese colonial period, after the Republic of China receive Taiwan, ask schools anniversary celebration in October 25, and school history use year of the Republic of China. Fortunately the editors of the journal of education compiled the materials and tried to show the development of the school. So we could have a glimpse of the development of the Taiwanese schools in the Japanese era. However, the local chronicles of the history of the Japanese school history records whether there are any noteworthy. The author starts from the more familiar Chiayi area, with the example of Jiayi City History and Jiuyi County History of Education, as an example, in order to observe the local history of county and city Records the history of the school, and archives historical data to supplement, Chiayi County, Chi-chih school history records deficiencies.
