Field investigation is one of important historical research methods, and it is also an important work that can not be neglected in compiling local chronicles. With the prevalence of paleography, the application of paleography in the compilation of local history has gradually become a trend. This paper takes the author's experience of compiling three capters as the Capter "Evolution" in Da-li City History, the Capter "Evolution" and "Sociography"in Da-cun Township Chronicle, and gives an example of how to use fi eld investigation and paleography in compilation of local chronicles jobs. By field surveys, we can fill in incomplete portions of known historical events, such as the relationship between Tapani Incident and Da-cun Townshi. Or to fi nd some events, landscape or historical remains which may be overlooked, such as the Washing Steam in Da-li City, the Fa Cai Temple and the Gu Niang temple in Da-cun Township, the Guan Yin Temple Ashes in the Jia-rou Keng, and the Lai's Audience Room in Wu Fang Tian Tou. The application of paleography can rebuild important historical events, such as the relationship between Tapani Incident and Da-cun Township, explore the evolution of old place names, such as Da Gu Po, Jie Hai, Gong Ci, etc., and clarify the Chronological record, such as founding year of the Lao Sih Ma Huei.If we could widely collected historical materials, coupled with diligent fi eld investigates, and make good use of oral interviews and paleography while compiling the local chronicles, the results must surpass the original imagination.
