嘉義徐家在清治時期即擁有進士頭銜，也有一位貢生，二位廩生，二 位秀才，是嘉義地區首屈一指的家族。日治時期徐德新進入保良局後授配 紳章，更陸續擔任嘉義南區街庄長與嘉義廳參事。長子徐杰夫隨著父親的 腳步也授配勳章，持續擔任嘉義廳山仔頂區庄長以及嘉義廳參事，更長期 擔任嘉義區長。在嘉義地方政治上，實無其他家族能出其右。 嘉義徐家之所以有如此的成就，在於善於經營家族。嘉義徐家族聚居 地在山仔頂「徐厝」，採取同財共爨的聚居生活方式，也修築有家族墓 園，因此家族成員的向心力都優於其他家族。嘉義徐家也將子弟都送至日 本內地求學，後代子孫多能從日本各大學取得學位，終能人才輩出。 擔任大家長的徐杰夫也積極培養子弟們參與公共事務，更與各大家族 聯姻，並在公共領域上，如雲嘉地區最重要的宗教聖地　　北港朝天宮與 新港奉天宮，都積極奉獻。這都顯示出徐家大家長的卓越領導智慧與恢宏 之遠見，比起嘉義其他家族，嘉義徐家的顯赫與豐榮顯然是傲視一方。
