The Yun-lin Event, an armed uprising against the Japanese rule of Taiwan
from 1895 through 1902, mainly occurred in the mountain area of today’s
Gukeng(古坑), Yunlin County. Based on archives and literature, this paper
surveys the historic sites of the event, gathering the local historical materials and
conducting in-depth interviews. Supplemented by the locals’ historical memory
of the event and Ke-Tie(柯鐵), one of the leading anti-Japanese activists, the
paper also investigates its historical authentication and explores the event in
Gukeng from the perspective of Big History.
By the interchange of the archives and literature as well as historical
memory and historic sites, the paper involves local perspectives, discussing the
Yun-lin Event and making several observations and conclusions: 1. Due to its
mountainous terrains intersected by faults and rivers, Gukeng provided the
anti-Japanese activists with natural domains and bases. 2. The crux of the Yun-lin
Event, which involved a large number of participants and became a protracted
uprising, lies in the 1896 “Yun-lin massacre” by the Japanese government, where
many villagers were slaughtered and forced to flee into the mountains, joining
the anti-Japanese group Tie-Guo-Shan(鐵國山). 3. All the surrenders in the
Yun-lin Event were killed, including the leaders, none of whom were spared to
become one the driving economic forces. This distinguishes the Yun-lin Event
among others. 4. Elders in Gukeng don’t consider the anti-Japanese activists
“bandits.” Meanwhile, they don’t deify Ke-Tie, either. The locals’ historical
memory intertwined with historical materials is highly credible. 5. The on-site
steles, relics, and local documents concerning the Yun-lin Event reveal details
unfolded in the official archives, further inquiring and interpreting the other side
of history.
