金子昌太郎與臺灣甘蔗品種改良

本文旨在究明金子昌太郎長年任職於糖業試驗場、中央研究所糖業科 期間,從事甘蔗品種改良之經緯和成果,以釐清其在近代臺灣甘蔗農業改 良之角色、貢獻及地位。 由本文探討結果可知,金子最大的貢獻乃是成功培育出甘蔗實生新品 種,開啟臺灣甘蔗品種改良之端緒,結果,總督府推廣優良實生新品種取 代 Rose Bamboo,遂開啟臺灣甘蔗農業之新紀元。在金子主持下,糖業試 驗場不斷培育出優良的實生新品種,分別帶來 1920 年代、1930 年代前期臺 灣甘蔗產量的新高峰;連1930年代糖業試驗所培育推廣的臺灣實生108號, 實際上也是 1927 年金子試育已有初步成果。金子為臺灣的甘蔗農業獻身長 達 30 年,撰寫《甘蔗農學》之鉅著,以及許多的實驗報告,深刻影響臺灣 糖業發展和盛衰,可說是臺灣糖業之大功勞者。因此,戰後有人稱金子為 「臺灣甘蔗品種改良之父」。
英文摘要
This article provided a sketch of Kaneko Masataro’s career and achievements during his service at the Sugar Industry Experimental Field of the Japanese Government-General. According to this study, Masataro’s major contribution was to cultivate new species for sugarcane that replaced “Rose Bamboo”, which was previously imported from abroad. This led to the beginning of the sugarcane improvement in Taiwan. Under the leadership of Masataro, the Sugar Industry Experimental Field continued to develop different new species that brought the sugarcane production to reach new peaks from the 1920s to the early 1930s. F108, one of the most widely grown sugarcane species in the 1930s, was in fact originated from the experiment of Masataro in 1927. Masataro had dedicated himself to Taiwan’s sugarcane agriculture for 30 years. His work “Agriculture of the Sugarcane “ and many reports made a strong influence on Taiwan’s sugar industry development. For this reason, Masataro was honored as “the father of sugarcane improvement of Taiwan” after the World War Two.
