One of the most common challenges in overseas evangelical efforts was how missionaries sought to bridge the cultural gap between "gospel and culture". George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901) faced in his Northern Taiwan mission was how to engage cultural challenges. The most notable among these cultural challenges was making sense of the mix of Han cultural traditions, the ‘three teachings’ (Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism) and folk religion and customs. In dealing with the cultural challenges, however, Mackay was not actually starting from scratch. When Mackay went to Taiwan, he was guided by major traditions in Canada and the west. Mackay grew up in the third generation of missionaries, and expressed great reverence for famous missionaries. Thus he had advantages in standing on the shoulders of these prior generations. In his early explorative and latter missionary efforts in Northern Taiwan, Mackay was the inheritor of the wisdom of earlier generations, building on a legacy he hoped to pass on to others. This essay will discuss Mackay’s ways of interacting and communicating with the Han people, during his evangelical efforts among them. As a third-generation missionary to China, what approaches did he adopt in preaching and evangelism and how did local people respond to his approaches?
