英文摘要
During the Qing rule, spaces for leisure and social interaction
among government officials and members of the gentry emerged
in Taiwan Prefecture. For Qing officials posted from China to
Taiwan, “heterotopias” such as official gardens and recreational
spaces scattered throughout the city and its outskirts were places
where officials of all levels could mingle for literary gatherings and
scenic tours. These recreational spaces were gradually developed
from the beginning of the Qing rule of Taiwan to the early Qianlong
reign and can be divided into five categories: stand-alone gardens;
gardens affiliated with government offices; temples and monasteries;
natural scenic sites; and privately owned facilities. While some were
newly built spaces, more were renovations or expansions of existing
structures built in the Ming dynasty. The creation of these recreational
spaces was mainly undertaken by civilian officials such as circuit
intendants (daotai) and prefects (zhifu), who brought to Taiwan both
facilities and cultural events, such as visits to gardens and temples,
literary gatherings, and performances, thus setting the direction for the development of gardens and recreational spaces for government
offices in Taiwan Prefecture.
