The ancestors of the Topa, an indigenous group of people originated in Pinsbukan, Renai Township, Nantou County, in the middle region of today’s Taiwan. They moved to the areas near the lower Tahan River located in the northern part of Taiwan hundreds years ago, and formed the tribes such as Topa, Ibox, Shilung and so on, in the mountain of Sanxia District, New Taipei City. Since the late 19th century, their lands and bases for living were colonized by the armed invasions committed under the policy of the Qing Dynasty called Opening the Mountains and Pacifying the Savages, and that of Japan called Lifan Policy. The Topa people were deported from Sanxia and had to move their bases for living to areas such as Jiaobanshan, Zhiji and Shilung, that is, the northern part of Fuxing District, Taoyuan City, living as a stranger. Since the Pacific War ended, the Topa group has consistently hold to their demand for return to their hometown up until now in the 21st century. They have continued to carry out campaigns and actions for their return to where their ancestors used to live. Their campaigns not only triggered the other Taiwanese indigenous people’ movements for “return to hometown” in the history of Taiwan, but also has been recognized as the most revered social movement of indigenous people since the 1980s. This study aimed to discuss return to their ancestors’ land in the context of the history and culture of indigenous people focusing on their viewpoint on ‘myself’ and the ‘local’ perspective of their campaigns. This study attempted to reproduce the process of the development of tribes that the descendants of the Topa group went through and their return to hometown movement, to identify the practical problems that they faced in returning to Sanxia, and how they can find the knots to resolve the problems under different backgrounds, and to explore the historical meaning.
