This article examines the involvement of Taiwanese indigenous peoples in the area around the 27 Brigade operations during the 228 Incident. It aims to understand why there were rumors about “backing from the Wushe (or Musha) “Savage Tribe” in Taichung, and why some 27 Brigade members chose to seek help from the Wushe locals. Thanks to oral testimonies, it offers a perspective of indigenous peoples that has not received enough attention so far, as well as a more vivid picture of them during the Incident. The 27 Brigade in Taichung adopted a resistance approach during the 228 Incident, which may explain why eventually an indiscriminate massacre did not take place in Taichung City. According to official sources, more than one hundred indigenous people participated in the uproar in Taichung City – it was even pointed out that they came from Wushe. However, it is more likely that they were members of the “Puli Team”, sent from the Nenggao District of Puli. Probably due to three reasons that they were misidentified: first, the Puli Team entered Taichung City at a time very close to when the 27 Brigade leader Chung I-jen first asked for help from Wushe; second, the Puli Team was composed mainly of Pingpu peoples (or Plains indigenous peoples) with similar appearance; and finally, there were indeed some Wushe or Qingliu (or Alan Gluban) locals involved. There are different reasons why this key figure of the 27 Brigade appealed to Wushe in the first place: In addition to geographical proximity, historical memory could have played a role ― former members of the Taiwanese Communist Party may have had the idea of seeking cooperation and support from Taiwanese indigenous peoples since the Musha Incident. Although the 27 Brigade received no positive responses from Wushe, Seediq people from this area and those who had moved to Chuanzhongdao She (or Kawanakajima Tribe) did take part in the 228 Incident, some actively engaged while others passively affected. Other indigenous peoples involved, whether actively or passively, include students from various ethnic groups studying in Taichung at that time
