The people of the region of Wu 吳 traditionally believed that witchcraft was more effective than medical treatment. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, when sick they have often sought treatment through kanxiang (看香 incense reading) or xuanjuan (宣卷 scripture telling), practices that continue even to the present day. These methods have been denigrated by scholars and mocked as superstitious beliefs. However, on a cultural and societal level they are still regarded as having the power to calm the body, mind, and spirit of the sick. Female shamans communicate with the spirits and, through the power of the words of the xuanjuan, carry out “cultural healing.” The power of xuanjuan lies in the narration of their content. Baojuan (寶卷 precious scrolls) used to treat diseases are divided into three categories, depending on the nature of the central deity or protagonist of the text. In the first type, he or she has no connection with the healing arts, but is able to quell mischievous spirits, or else is a mischievous spirit. In the second, he or she has specialist healing skill. In the last type, he or she has neither magical power nor healing skill but is nevertheless able to heal the sick and help people live longer due to his or her religious and moral cultivation. These baojuan aim to fulfil people’s desire for peace in this life and wishes for a peaceful death and trouble-free next life. There are several means employed by xuanjuan to suppress ghosts and treat disease: enticement by promising benefits; suppression by force; use of specialist abilities; and advising people to do good and practice the discipline. All these “prescriptions” are based in religious faith, and applied through the scripture-telling ceremony. The power of the words of the xuanjuan effects healing in patients, by giving them therapeutic treatment on a spiritual level. Even in these more enlightened times, people still seek additional security, and so it has become the norm to double-up on treatment by “asking the ghosts and spirits, while also doing what is humanly possible.”
