在中國北方，泰山女神碧霞元君識廣受民眾崇拜的一位民間神教的神祇。人們視她為迷子，保子的女神，有些人則相信她坐鎮泰山，依著人們的善惡，降下災祥禍福。碧霞元君的信仰起源於宋朝。宋真宗至泰山型行封禪之禮時，於泰山頂見一玉女像，遂為之建廟奉祠，此集泰山女神的由來。不過，直至明清二朝，碧霞元君的信仰才達到高峰，從其發源地山東流佈到北京一帶。
