郁達夫曾提出個人對現代傳記文學的看法，並且寫了許多篇傳記作品。他在理論部份所強調的方向，著重於將傳記視為一種文學藝術，而不是史學的分支。可以說在中國現代傳記文學理論的奠基上，郁達夫補充了另一部份，也就是文學部份的不足。 郁達夫的自傳，為他所標舉的「新的傳記文學」做了最佳的示範。行文時不但兼顧外在世界與內心起伏，而且適當地運用了文學技巧，將許多他人無法表達的情境與感受，清晰地傳達出來。不過他雖然在理論上反對傳記歌功頌德，可是當他為了宣傳或教育的目的而替別人作傳時，卻也不得不犧牲自己的理念，寫出歌頌傳主的文章。

Beside his two articles about the theory of contemporary biography, the famous writer, Yu Da-Fu also wrote many biographies. His theory of biography is slightly different than the other scholars, who focus on the importance of documentation. For Yu biogrpahy is a kind of literature not another branch or part of history. Thus comes the importance of Yu. Yu's autobiography has made a perfect model for his “New Biography”. He does not only emphasize both outer and inner world, but also uses techniques of literature to express proper mood, which is unreachable by others. Although he is against to praise a person, he also returned to eulogistic “life-writing” in writing biographies.
