《金瓶梅》是否為一部淫書？《金瓶梅》有沒有微言大義？是歷代讀者一直爭論不休的兩個問題。不過自魯迅提出「世情書」的講法之後，學界即傾向以「世情小說」為這部鉅著定位。然而何謂世情？魯迅究竟怎麼界定世情小說？《金瓶梅》裡如何形塑人物以鋪寫世情？又描摹出了哪些世情？本文嘗試回答這些問題，並認為這項工作是研究明、清世情小說的重要基礎。

Is Gin Ping Mei an erotic novel? Does Gin Ping Mei have profound meaning in it? These are two debatable questions from generation to generation. But since Lu-Xun mentions the usage of "secular book," the academic circle tends to identify this masterpiece with "secular novel." However, what is secular? How does Lu-Xun identify secular novel? How are the characters presented in it, and what kinds of secular themes are in it? This essay attempts to figure out these questions and that effort is the foundation to research the secular novel of Ming and Ching dynasty.
