王安憶的小說不論篇幅長短，都具有逼真、生動的細節，但卻盡可能的降低故事中的社會背景，因此讀起來像是一篇篇有關人生或道德意義的故事。不過，在近期的長篇小說《上種紅菱下種藕》中，為了描寫社會變遷中的小鎮，社會背景的成分大為增加，使得這本小說成為王安憶作品中最特殊的一部，最為接近西方的社會小說。

Wether Wang An-Yi's short stories or novels, all of them are with mimic and vivid details, but due to the intentaional vagueness of story's social backgrounds, they are more like stories about life and morality than modern fiction. However, in the recent fictional work Shang Zhung Hung Lien Xia Zhung O, Wang polished the story's social background in order to describe the transformation of a small town during different periods. Therefore, this fictional work is Wang's most special one, close to the western definition of “Novel”.
