In 1960s, people in Taiwan were still leading a quiet conservative way of life, and the ruling by KMT made the intellectual condition even worse, therefore young intellectuals ‘vigor were severely suppressed. In that time, the concept “Romantic love” was popular, however, most of the young generation had no chance to practice and enjoy such merry experience, and consequently they felt frustrated and solitary. In this paper, I would like to analyze how the specific state of mind of this young generation was combined with the western modernist literary works, which was imported on those days. The fusion of the local and foreign trends eventually shaped the appearance of the Taiwanese modernist literary movement.
