元稹和白居易前後交往三十年，詩歌唱和近千首。唱和不僅有力地推動了他們的諷喻詩創作，而且，也改進了彼此的詩風、完善了其詩歌理論，促進了詩歌史的發展。在中國文學史上，元稹與白居易並稱“元、白”，並稱的原因，自然是多方面的，然而詩歌唱和無疑是其中的重要原因之一。元、白前後交往三十年，唱和贈答詩近千首，為他們贏得了聲譽，也對他們自身的創作和文學史的進程產生了很大的影響。
