從祀孔廟意謂著進入儒門聖域,身後獲得傳承聖人之道的肯認,因此,即使國君仍是最終的裁定者,但對從祀儒者的取捨進黜,卻成為朝臣廷議中政治勢力的角力場域、儒門流衍中道統嬗遞的攻駁論壇,荀子在明代黜祀的歷程,即是一鮮明之例。本文首先梳理明初至嘉靖時期奏章、《實錄》、儒士對荀子從祀之評議,說明荀子遭黜祀的真正原因,實不在於經典著述不足,亦非德行表現之疵,而是在於所言性惡、禮偽、非十二子等主張,不見容於當時逐步邁向學術主流的程朱理學;其次,指出罷祀事件中所昭示明儒建構的從祀判準思維,應是從「報功」的觀點來衡量,亦即對「聖人之道」的護持、傳衍中有所貢獻者。最後說明,若依照明儒所建構的思維模式,從祀與否應取決於儒者在當時代的發展及所肩負的意義,則在儒學動態發展與多元趨勢的前提上,荀子可說是與現代儒學接榫的最佳人選,若得以復祀孔廟,必當深具時代意義。
