In traditional Chinese society, it is of vital importance to perform proper funeral and necessary rituals, one of which is the Transition Care of the 49-days-after-death. In Chinese history, the ritual of chaodu (to expiate the sins of the dead) has played an important role for both Daoist and Buddhist believers. This paper discusses the Transitional Care of the 49-Days-after-Death in Taoism and Buddhism through careful examining of the Tibetan Buddhist classic, Tibetan Book of the Dead and Daoist classics. This paper attempts to fi nd out the reason why Tibetan Book of the Dead and Taoist classics pay so much importance to the "七七"(last seventh-day memorial ceremony), and its signifi cance.
